Multi-objective optimal control for energy extraction and lifetime maximisation in dielectric elastomer wave energy converters

In this paper, we model the multi-objective optimisation problem for maximising energetic performance while minimising damage accumulation in ocean wave energy converters based on dielectric elastomer generators (DEGs). DEGs are electrostatic smart-material-based transducers that cheaper, lighter, and more adaptable to marine environment than conventional power take-off systems. Because prone electrical breakdown upon cyclic loading, identifying trade-offs between achievable lifetime is currently a crucial research question. Based some assumptions system layout material properties, using methods of Pareto optimisation, prove suitably chosen control strategy can potentially achievez dramatic reduction accumulated at expense small harvested energy. We further compare optimal solutions with commonly used heuristics DEGs, showing provide preserving (or even improving) performance.
